This is used to determine the alcohol content of your beer and tells you when your beer is ready to bottle.

Once your beer is done fermenting, you will transfer it into a bottling bucket using a straightforward siphon. The bottling bucket is outfitted with a spigot that makes it easy to pour your beer into their destined container. In addition to this, by siphoning the beer into a secondary container, you can separate the beer from the residue that will collect at the bottom of your primary fermenter. Once your beer is in the bottling bucket, you will mix it with some sugar to start the carbonation process and then pour it into its intended bottles.

Your home brewing kit will also contain a non-porous heat resistant brewing paddle as well as no-rinse sterilizer powder. A very important part of brewing beer at home is preventing contaminants from getting into your wort. Even the slightest contaminant can result in beer with a funny taste. The no-rinse sterilizer is an easy way to clean your equipment before you begin brewing. When making your wort, many people opt to use a wooden spoon to stir. If a brewer makes beer, what is the name of a person that makes wine? Many people would say brewer, but this is incorrect. It also points to the fact that the titles of many positions in the wine industry are simply unknown. In this article, we look to shed some light on the subject.

Regardless, this must mean the viticulturist is the person we can designate as the wine maker, right? Not exactly.

Another person takes over the wine production process once that grapes are picked. This person is known as an “oenologist”. That is a lot to run over the tongue, so many people just call the oenologist a vintner or winemaker. I prefer vintner, but you can choose your own phrase. Regardless, this individual takes over the control of the grapes once they are picked. He is in charge of everything from the cleaning to formation to bottling process and every step in between. Put another way, the buck stops with the vintner.

An obvious question may have come to mind while reading the above. Is it common to have the viticulturist also be the vintner? It occurs from time to time, but not very often. The two disciplines are very different. One is very agriculturally oriented while the other is very much a classic brewing position. It is rare for one person to be skilled enough in both areas to pull off handling both positions.

There is one other position that is critical in the wine industry – the oenophile. That would be you and me. We are people that love to drink wine. The name, however, sounds like something illegal, so most people just stick to wine drinker!

As a cheese ages, its moisture level decreases and the cheeses become more firm. Examples of semi-soft cheeses include Raclette, Trugole, and younger versions of Asiago.

Smoked cheeses are those that have been exposed to smoke for a period of time. The smoky flavor permeates throughout the cheese giving it a unique flavor. The smoke generated could be made from a variety of types of wood, which also affect the cheeses flavor. Examples of this cheese include Brezain, Smoked Mozzarella, and Pavarti.

These types of cheese are sprayed with a type of Penicillium mold that creates a velvety, pillowy and fluffy rind. Most soft ripened cheese have creamy pate. Examples of these cheeses include Brie, Camembert, and Fromage D’Affinois.

Firm cheeses are aged cheeses that still have some moisture that adds to the cheeses flavor. The rinds of these cheeses are typically not eaten and these cheeses have dense flavors. Examples of these cheeses include Manchego, Comte, and Cheddar.

Hard cheeses are the most aged cheeses that are rich in flavor and dry in texture. These are the cheeses that are firm enough to grate. Examples of these cheeses include Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino Romano, and Old Amsterdam.

Also known as mountain cheeses, alpine cheeses are those that have been produced from the milk of animals from typically high altitude herds but also from herds in a cold climate. These cheeses are typically cows milk cheeses that are made in large wheels and aged for a significant period of time. The majority of these cheeses come from in and around the Alps and is produced primarily in Switzerland, France, and Italy although versions in other regions of the world are produced. These cheeses are traditionally firm although there are some soft versions, with flavor components that are nutty and herbaceous. Examples of these cheese include Appenzeller, Comte, Gruyere, Beaufort, and Fontina Val d’Aosta.

The term blue cheese is a classification describing a cheese that has been injected with a type Penicillium culture to create the spread of blueish green mold veins throughout the pate of a cheese.
